First impression wasn't great for Smash bros. The game did absolutely nothing to initiate new players - no worth while training or tutorial. I didn't even know there was a shield and dash button until about 6 hours of gameplay.

You better know how to play Smash Bros already, because this game ain't teaching you jack shit.

Typically in past Smash games, the tutorial happens when you stay on the intro screen without pressing any buttons for too long.

I watched plenty of Youtube before hand to get an idea what I was doing at least. But there is a "How to play" In the help menu. Shame on nintendo for making people do homework? hehe.

Like Hero of Comedy mentioned, the tutorial usually happens from waiting on the start screen. Most players learned by doing as a result, myself included.
